At CMFTO, we work with a lot of clients who are rightsizing their homes and their lives. Often, they’re transitioning from a space where they hosted large dinner parties to something more streamlined. When we’re helping them declutter and organize their dishes and dining room, the question often becomes, “What do we do with all our china?”
Over the years, many of us inherit family dishes and serving pieces. These items often hold nostalgic value for us beyond their purpose. When we use Aunt Nancy’s holiday china, for example, we’re reminded of times in our youth when the family gathered together for celebrations. So, even though we may never actually use it today, the china still takes up residence in our dining room and cabinets.
When addressing items like these, it’s important to ask ourselves a few questions:
Let’s address the last question first. Here at CMFTO, we believe in using and enjoying our favorite pieces as everyday items. In my own home, I prefer to drink my coffee out of fine porcelain mugs, even if it’s a single piece I found in an antique store — actually, especially if it’s a single piece. There’s something wonderfully magical about not saving the special china for those once-a-year special occasions but instead making each day special by using it regularly. So, if you’re wondering what you can do with your favorite pieces – you can use and enjoy them!
If, on the other hand, you’re wondering what to do with all the items you no longer wish to keep and use (that is, you answered “no” to most of the questions above), we have other solutions — including donating, auctioning, or consigning your items.
Even better, you can have vetted individual buyers come to your home and make you a direct offer. This is especially beneficial because the buyer comes to you, removes the purchases immediately after the sale, and pays you directly (no fees to estate agents, auctioneers, or consignors). At CMFTO, we work with some excellent buyers who specialize in things like china and silver and who enjoy working one-on-one with our clients. And we’ve already done the work for you by identifying and vetting each buyer we work with, so we know we can trust them to make the best deal when working with you.
Whether you have 20 sets of china or two, if you’re not using them, don’t enjoy them, and/or can’t gift them to a family member, working directly with one of our trusted buyers is the perfect solution for clearing out your dining room clutter.
All my best,
